I have created a website where you can enter the model code of a Subaru Sambar 5th generation to get back what the model code means. Thanks to Robert Krenicki who has made the code available and decoded it. Which he has made available via Google Docs. A big thank to Robert.

The website can be found at the address https://subaru-sambar-model-decode.vercel.app/

Overview

Section 1:

  • K: kei class (660cc engine)
  • S: sambar series
  • 4: 4WD truck model → If it were KS3, it would be a 2WD truck.

Section 2:

This letter usually indicates the trim level or equipment package. For example:

  • A = Basic model
  • B = Mid-level trim
  • C/D/E = Higher trim or special editions

(Exact meanings may vary slightly depending on year and market, especially in Japan.)

Section 3:

This is a configuration code that refers to:

  • Transmission type (e.g., 5 speed manual)
  • 4WD system type (e.g., with or without low range)
  • Factory options (e.g., rear diff lock, air conditioning)
  • Engine management (carburetor vs EFI)

Subaru doesn’t publish all these details publicly, but they’re found in workshop manuals and parts catalogs (EPC).

Section 4:

The final letter usually indicates the market specification or steering orientation:

  • J = Japanese Domestic Market (JDM)
  • R = Right-hand drive export
  • L = Left-hand drive export (very rare for Sambars)

The source is as mentioned a document on Google Docs Spreadsheet.
